What a 5-second penalty means, when it escalates, and every one on record.

Five seconds added to the driver’s race time, or served at their next pit stop before any work is done on the car. The most common in-race sanction.

When it escalates
For a more serious offence the stewards move up to a 10-second penalty, then a drive-through or stop-and-go.
